Some people find they become fatigued when they’re withdrawn from steroids. For this reason, it’s best to reduce the dosage gradually, but only do this under supervision of your doctor. But there can be negative physical health and psychological effects, including increased confidence and increased aggression.

The researchers assessed the cardiovascular disease risk in people with six inflammatory diseases taking lower doses of glucocorticoids. Steroids have a powerful anti-inflammatory effect and are often used to reduce inflammation. Steroids can be used in the treatment of allergic conditions such as flea allergy dermatitis (skin inflammation and itchiness), asthma-like diseases, food allergies and bee stings.

  • HIV drugs – steroids and some HIV drugs both raise levels of cholesterol (fat in the blood), so if you’re being treated for HIV you should be careful about using muscle-building drugs.
  • Methylprednisolone is usually supplied as tablets containing 100mg of the medicine.
  • They may suggest taking the steroids early in the day to minimise disruption to your sleep pattern.

AAS are the synthetic derivative of the male hormone testosterone. These supplements promote muscle growth and development (anabolic) of masculine characteristics (androgenic). There are lots of different steroids out there, and some people combine multiple supplements with other medications to control their side effects.

Can you have a beer on steroids?

Dr Mahmood’s patients tend to be aware of more common issues with steroid abuse such as erectile dysfunction, reduced sperm count and infertility. (One study found men who use steroids have a 90% chance of becoming sterile). “But what people seem less aware of is the other, possibly more serious, stuff – the mental health problems, high cholesterol, risk of blood clots, heart problems and heart attacks,” he adds.

They’re used by some bodybuilders, athletes and other sports people because of their performance enhancing effects, and these users may consume 10 to 100 times the medical dose. If you’re planning a family, you should discuss this with your doctor, as it’s important that a mother stays healthy during pregnancy and that flare-ups are avoided. If you get pregnant while you’re on steroids, don’t stop taking them before you’ve spoken to your doctor.

If you’ve been taking corticosteroids for a while, you may also need tests before you stop taking them. These will make sure that your adrenal glands are still working properly. In these situations, you will only be prescribed oral corticosteroids if the benefits of treatment outweigh any potential risks.

Get help with steroid addiction

Some other skin problems, such as rosacea, acne and ulcers, can be made worse by steroid creams so you might not be able to take them if you have any of these conditions. They’ll discuss your addiction with you, how to safely stop taking steroids, and any obstacles you may face when trying to stop, plus tips for dealing with those obstacles. A person who is addicted to anabolic steroids will want to keep using them despite experiencing unpleasant physical side effects.

How are corticosteroids taken?

Steroids are chemical messengers (hormones) that are made naturally in your body. The type of steroids most commonly used in the treatment of lymphoma are corticosteroids. If you have diabetes, you will need increased monitoring of your blood sugar levels while you have the steroids and may need to be admitted to hospital to be offered additional insulin treatment.

If you have epilepsy this could become worse when taking steroids. You might have a burning or tingling sensation around your bottom during a steroid injection into a vein (intravenous). Your nurse will give the injection slowly to try and prevent this. Take your tablets after a meal or with milk as they can irritate your stomach.

Corticosteroids

Your child needs to be closely monitored while on steroid treatment, which may include checking their weight, blood pressure and urine. Your GP surgery, local hospital or local community nurses will usually run these check ups. We’ll arrange for a blood test to check your child’s antibodies to chicken pox and your child may need an injection to protect them, but your doctor or nurse will talk through this with you.
